The Concept of Sustainability in Islam

Striking a balance in everything that we do extends to how we interact with our planet. The Quran includes hundreds of verses that describe nature and how everything was created in perfect balance. In one verse, the Almighty says, “And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing” [Al-Hijr 15:19].

The interactions between nature and mankind are guided by the principle of guardianship or being a "khalifa" on earth. It allows us to enjoy the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us, while at the same time, it demands that we protect or planet and preserve its natural resources for future generations. Allah forbids us from wasting natural resources and from polluting earth.

In the sixth chapter of the Quran, Allah says, “And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess” [Al-An’am 6:141].

We are also commanded by Allah not to cause any corruption on earth which could disrupt that balance. In another verse, Allah, exalted is He says, “And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers” [Al A’raf 7:85].

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, gave great incentives for those who take good care of the land. In one hadith, he said, “If anyone brings barren land into cultivation, then he owns it.” In another beautiful hadith, he, peace be upon him, said, “If a Muslim plants a tree or sow seeds, and a bird, a person or an animal eats from it, then it will be considered as charity (sadaqah) for him.”

Sustainability: A Founding Principle of Halal Living

Guided by those teachings from Quran and Sunnah, Halal Living is fully committed to protecting the environment by minimizing the carbon footprint of our products. We have taken the following measures to accomplish this:

  • Using Recyclable Materials - All of our bottles are made from 100% recyclable material, and we encourage everyone to recycle empty bottles after use.
  • Optimizing Shipping Efficiency - We partner with shipping companies that select the most efficient shipping carrier based on package size, weight and delivery address. This minimizes the amount of fuel used to deliver our products.
  • Minimizing Waste - We offer bigger packages with a larger day supply, 90 days or more, for most of our products. This means less plastic bottles are used per person per year.
  • Providing Incentives - We offer discounts and free shipping, in select countries, to customers who place larger orders. Our aim is to encourage people to place less orders per year, minimizing the amount of fuel used to deliver their products.

Continued Investment in Sustainability Initiatives

It is not enough to minimize our impact on the environment. We also need to actively protect our planet. Jochen Zeitz stated perfectly: "Sustainability is no longer about doing less harm. It is about doing more good." In addition to taking measures to  minimize our impact on the environment, we are also committed to supporting various sustainability initiatives aimed at protecting our planet and preserving its natural resources. This includes recycling programs and clean energy projects.

Please join us in making our planet a better and safer place for our children. Every little effort counts, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. In one beautiful hadith, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, "If the day of judgement erupts and one of you is holding a palm shoot, let him carry on and plant it."
