The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Pressing Need for a Hard Reset

The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Pressing Need for a Hard Reset

A Deeper Look into the Cause and Cure of the Current Coronavirus Pandemic

By Dr. Ahmed Zikri

In this article, I will not attempt to trace the origin of COVID-19, whether it is a natural virus or a biological weapon or which drugs should be used to treat it. Instead, I hope to present you with an argument that can help all of us confront this pandemic as well as any other natural or human-made calamity in the future.

In His final revelation to people, the Almighty Allah presents a compelling example. In chapter 22, verse 73 of the Holy Quran, Allah says: {O People, an example is given, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. And if the fly should steal away from them a [tiny] thing, they could not recover it from it. Weak are the pursuer and the pursued.}

Since the disbelievers at that time were invoking other idols besides Allah, He challenged them to ask those false deities to use all of their combined powers to create a fly. If these idols cannot create something as tiny as a fly, it follows that these disbelieving polytheists should only worship the One God who is the sole Creator of the Heavens & Earth and thus should associate no partners with Him.

Today, all the technological advancements we’ve been blessed with made a large percentage of the world’s population believe that we can create anything we want, hence eliminating any remaining needs for the Creator. To these people, I say: The Creator has a message for you.

More than 1400 years ago, Allah gave the example that all the false deities being worshiped along with Him cannot recover a bite of food stolen by a mere fly, let alone create a fly themselves. Fast-forward to today, and with all the technological advancements the world is witnessing at an unprecedented rate, the challenge still stands. Not only can we not create a fly, but if a fly steals a bite of food from us and flies away, despite how powerful we would like to think we are, we can never recover that bite of food again.

The Creator of the heavens and earth continues to show humankind signs there is only one Creator and that they should worship Him alone. Each sign must be fully comprehended by the people to whom the sign was sent. For the Arabs, to whom the Quran was revealed more than 1400 years ago, a fly was given as an example to demonstrate that none of the idols they worshiped with God could create such a tiny creature.

The revelation stopped with the death of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, more than 1400 years ago. However, the divine signs didn’t stop. The Coronavirus Pandemic is the latest sign that humankind, with all its power, resources, and technology, stands utterly helpless in the face of the smallest microorganism created by Allah - an organism so small, it can only be seen using the electron microscope, a device that was invented less than 100 years ago.

The coronavirus didn't steal a single bite of food from us; rather, it completely changed the lives of everyone on earth, and according to many experts, life will never be the same again going forward. Millions of people have been infected all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to die from this disease. The entire world is on lockdown, with the global economy melting down by the minute. Trillions of dollars have been wiped off the stock markets. Millions of businesses of different sizes will disappear, and hundreds of millions of people will lose their jobs by the time this pandemic is over. Only Allah knows when it will be over and if it will only happen again next year.

While on lockdown, most people are spending their time asking all the wrong questions. How did it all start? Was it a man-made weapon? If so, was it the Chinese who released it or was it the Americans?

We should all be asking very different questions right now. How did we get here in the first place? What did we, as humanity, do to deserve such a devastating punishment? What should we do during such difficult times? And how can we correct the situation and change our lives to prevent this from happening again?

Before answering these questions, we must remember a crucially important fact, one that is deeply instilled in our faith as Muslims. Nothing shall ever come to pass without the knowledge and permission of the Almighty Allah. Anything and everything that occurs comes from Allah, and everything that happens does happen for a good reason. {And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows. And no grain is there within the darkness of the earth and no moist or dry (thing) but that it is (written) in a clear record} [6:59].

We may not initially see the wisdom behind such a global event, but knowing that Allah is All-Wise compels us to fully believe that all of His actions are wise and thus everything that happens is for the greater good for all of humankind. Allah says in the second chapter of the Quran, {And perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you, and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not} [2:216].

It follows then that we should seek answers to more relevant questions from the book of Allah, with the first question being: why did Allah allow this to happen in the first place? The answer can be found in chapter 42, verse 30: {And whatever strikes you of disaster – it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much}. Many readers will wonder why would Allah, the Most Just, punish everyone, including innocent people, for the misdeeds of some. The answer can also be found in the following verse of the Quran: {And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty} [8:25].

We also need to remember that He is the Most Merciful, and if He was to punish us for all the sins we have committed, He would destroy everything on this earth. In another verse of the Quran, Allah says: {And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature. But He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, then indeed Allah has ever been, of His servants, Seeing} [35:45]. Instead, these events do take place, not to devastate people merely, but to bring them back to Him. Allah says in another verse: {Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by (reason of) what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of (the consequence of) what they have done that perhaps they will return (to righteousness} [30:41].

Therefore, we must firmly believe that any calamity befalling us - let it be this pandemic, an earthquake, a volcano, or any other natural or human-made disaster - does happen as a consequence of our wrongdoings. If we look around us, we can see nothing but greed, fighting, injustice, crimes against humanity, and the list goes on. If we pause for a second to take a more in-depth look at the state of our world today, we can clearly see that this pandemic is a great opportunity, despite how devastating it has been for the whole world, to hit the reset button. We need a complete reset that would allow us to restore humanity towards more harmonious relationships with our Creator, with the earth we live on and with each other.

The solution to all of this can be found in the following beautiful verse: {Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves} [13:11]. So by correcting our current paths to return to righteousness, this calamity can be uplifted. If we don't, this pandemic will not be the last threat we face. It may last for a very long time, or it may end soon, but it may strike again next year. Worst yet, there may be a deadlier virus with much higher transmissibility and mortality rates.

The list of potential threats is endless, from a massive earthquake to a global financial meltdown, to a third world war. We must find the ultimate solution to protect ourselves from these calamities and to face them properly when they do occur. We can't escape this reality by focusing on a short-term solution to the crisis we face today. Tomorrow, another threat will arise. Next year, a new one will take place, and this will continue until the end of time.

The only way to escape this is to seek protection from Allah, the One who has control over everything. And the only way Allah will grant us such protection is when we worship Him alone and when we conduct ourselves in a manner that is pleasing to Him in every aspect of our lives.

We can't change the world tomorrow, but we can start by changing ourselves today. We can start with ourselves, and then our families, then reach out to our neighbors and colleagues at work. The circle will slowly get bigger. If we all start doing that, there will be millions of small circles that will become increasingly bigger and will start to overlap over time. Not before long, there will be one massive circle of positive influence that covers the whole world. One enormous force of good that can change our lives and protect us from all the bad things to come.

Love the verse excerpts from Quran. A wake up call from Him to His servants. And the part bout others worshipping the false deities. Definitely a good read to everyone, no matter muslim or non. Also a reminder to myself, not to complain much with these lockdown, not being able to go out, no nothing to do. Probably the best time to reflect upon myself and start changing :)

A good writing and a perfect tought on this calamity. For those who believes everything happens is for a good reason as Allah’s plan is always right, will accept this as a wake-up call from Him.
